Crayfish (Koura) Point

"Run By Trampers For Trampers"

Crayfish Point is one area of the Heaphy Track that deserves a lot of respect. It's generally safe to traverse the point and Koura beach at least 2 hours either side of low tide. Any other time you are advised to keep a wary eye on the waves. Especially closer to high tide, when the sea is rough and coincides with a spring tide.

NEVER attempt to race the breaking waves as you will lose. There's a memorial plaque at the point to four trampers who sadly lost their lives here. As no one survived this tragic event it's believed they may have tried to cross between waves and were caught by a rouge wave. Only one body was ever found.

If in any doubt wait until it's safe to cross.

Approximate walking times to reach this section of track:  Kohaihai to Crayfish Point 1.5 - 2 hours.  Heaphy Hut to Crayfish Point 2.5 - 3hrs.

Click on the link below for the approximate HIGH & LOW Tide Times for Crayfish Point  It's normally safe to traverse the point 1 hour each side of High tide. But caution should be observed at all times.
