The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's most popular Great Walk. Situated in Kahurangi National Park traversing the remote top western section of the South Island. Each day is rewarded unbelievably by scenery better than the previous day. Ending dramatically with the coastal section passing through pristine Nikau Groves.
One of the best times to walk this track is Autumn or Winter. Although the days are shorter and colder. The weather is more settled without the large crowds.
Looking for something more challenging after this tramp/hike. Why not return to Nelson via the Wangapeka Track or Leslie Karamea Track. We can offer you transport options from these track ends. Click on the Links below for more detailed information on these tracks.

The Old Bainham Store
We always stop at the Old Bainham Store. Spend a few moments in the past, when life wasn't so complicated. Meet Lorna Langford the present owner. Her family has owned this store well over 70 years. Lorna is a gold mine for local history. Look for that lost letter in the Post Office.

The Salisbury Swingbridge We also stop on request at The Old Swingbridge. This bridge is over 100 years old and has survived many large floods. In fact the new road bridge from where this photo was taken was washed away in a flood in the 1980's. The locals warned the builders that it would get washed away. The replacement bridge is built slightly higher. |
