Heaphy Track Campsites

Updated 1st September 2010 "Run By Trampers For Trampers"

Although you cannot freedom camp on the Heaphy Track. DOC provide excellent campsites along the trail. Some even have mod cons like flush toilets and running water. The $12 nightly fee per person is very reasonable. Be warned that you will need a good tent that can handle cold wet conditions and the ever friendly local sandflies.

Tenting has it's advantages of not sharing noisy crowded huts. Nothing better than hearing  Kiwis calling out at night and been woken by the dawn chorus. The campsites are located to get the best out of back country camping in Kahurangi National Park. From the cool mists of Perry Saddle and Gouland Downs, to the soothing sound of the Heaphy River or the pounding West Coast surf. This has to one of New Zealand's best camping holidays.
